The Changeling

Beatrice-Joanna

She is the daughter of Vermandero and is known by everyone for her beauty, elegance, and charm. Recently, she became a widow, and her previous betrothed's death, Alonzo, remains a mystery. Nevertheless, she carries her sorrow with quiet gentleness and composure. To everyone around her, she appears a kind and dutiful girl. She shortly after gets engaged to Alsemero, a Valencian Nobleman. They seem to be a perfect couple despite everything.

De Flores

A servant to Vermandero and Beatrice, always loyal and trustworthy, a shadow that follows unquestioning. People don't pay much heed to him because of his unattractive appearance, though some think him honest and trustworthy.

Alsemero

A nobleman admired for his calm, rational nature. Known for his integrity and justness, he is deeply devoted to Beatrice and thus appears as a perfect match for her. Gentle and composed, he commands respect from all and stands as the embodiment of the ideal of noble conduct and moral integrity.

Alonzo

A wealthy nobleman, selected by Vermandero to marry his daughter Beatrice. He appears courteous, composed and reliable, the sort of man about whom everyone says that he will lead a prosperous, contented life. He is charming enough, though he tends to fade into the background.
